U.S. Requests for Google User Data Spikes 29 Percent in Six Months

The number of U.S. government requests for data on Google users for use in criminal investigations rose 29 percent in the last six months, according to data released by the search giant Monday.
U.S. government agencies sent Google 5,590 criminal investigation requests for data on Google users and services from Jan. 1 to June 30, 2011, an average of 31 a day. That’s compared to 4,601 requests from July 1 to Dec. 31, 2010, the company reported Tuesday in an update to its unique transparency tool.
Google says it complied in whole or part with 93% of such requests, which can include court orders, grand jury subpoenas and other legal instruments.
For the first time, Google’s transparency report includes the number of users and accounts affected by such requests — in this case, 11,057.
The search and software giant also received 92 requests to remove data from its services, including YouTube. The requests collectively asked for 757 individual pieces of content be removed. Google says it complied fully or partially with 63 percent of the requests. The company noted it received a request from law enforcement to take down a video showing police brutality and another for videos allegedly defaming law enforcement officials. Google did not comply with either.
Google is alone in providing this data to the public, which it says it hopes will give a push to efforts to reform a 25-year-old government privacy law that lets law enforcement get access to users’ online communications without having to get a judge’s approval.
Google is part of the so-called Due Process Coalition fighting for reform, but none of its fellow members — which include Amazon, aol, AT&T, Dropbox, Facebook and Microsoft — provide any data at all about how often the government requests data or how often they comply.
The transparency tool also covers requests from other governments around the world, but due to the size of the U.S. population, Google’s California headquarters and the large number of Americans online, the U.S. leads the world in data requests to the search giant.
The Chinese government filed no requests on user data — since Google does not keep data on Chinese citizens on servers in China.
The Chinese government sent Google three content removal requests regarding a total of 121 items. Google complied with two of these, saying the requests entailed ads that violated its adwords policy. The company could not discuss the third request, which it did not comply with, a spokewoman told Wired, since “We believe the Chinese government has prohibited us from full disclosure.”
Yahoo, Twitter, Comcast, AT&T, Verizon and Time Warner, among others, do not publish any such data, nor do they make it available when the media asks for it, even though there’s no law requiring them to keep such requests quiet.
Google cannot reveal some government data requests, however, and they are not included in this tally.
According to Google, the numbers do not include National Security Letters, a sort-of self-issued subpoena used by the FBI in drug and terrorism cases. At their post–Patriot Act peak, the FBI issued more than 50,000 such letters a year, nearly all with gag orders attached to them. The use of such letters dipped for a time after the Justice Department’s internal watchdog unveiled widespread abuses and sloppy procedures, but are on the rise again.
Also not included are national security wiretap and data requests, known as FISA warrants, that are approved by a secret court in D.C. to combat spies and threats to national security.
Nor is there any information on how much data, if any, the government forces Google to turn over en masse on individuals outside the United States, using broad powers handed to the government in 2008 by Congress. That legislation, initially opposed but later supported by Sen. Barack Obama, lets the government turn online service providers into intelligence collection arms of the U.S. government, so long as the “targets” aren’t known to be U.S. citizens.
When he was a candidate, President Obama pledged to revisit that law — passed as a way to legalize much of the Bush administration’s secret, warrantless wiretapping program, but the law remains in place.

AMD, With BlueStacks, Enables Android Apps On Windows Devices

AMD  announced last week its investment in BlueStacks, a global software firm which recently introduced BlueStacks App Player for Windows solution, allowing Android apps to run on any x86-based Windows PC, laptop, or tablet. The solution will be powered by AMD APUs and leverage AMD VISION Technology.
The AMD-BlueStacks collaboration is generating excitement among Android enthusiasts, as BlueStacks App Player for Windows solution enables access to the 200,000 plus apps available in the Android Market from any AMD-fueled Windows-based device. The use of BlueStacks App Player for Windows allows Android applications to run on Windows-based machines without requiring additional development efforts or modification.
AMD’s investment in BlueStacks is part of the chip-maker’s AMD Fusion Fund, a program that invests in organizations deploying innovative digital solutions based on AMD APU technology.
"Bluestacks is a visionary software company that is, seamlessly, making the emerging Android mobile apps market part of the broader computing ecosystem and enhancing such experiences on our award-winning APU platforms," said Manju Hegde, corporate vice president, AMD Fusion Experience Program, in a statement. "AMD is committed to support such game changing innovators through investment and other activity as we work together to usher in new experiences that allow consumers to enjoy the full capabilities of the brilliant graphics and computing performance enabled by AMD."
Hedge views the AMD Fusion Fund and AMD Fusion Experience Program as a "compelling" value-add to the channel, as it helps resellers provide more all-inclusive solutions to their customers and enhances the end-user experience overall. With the BlueStacks investment, specifically, Hedge told CRN that the transferability of Android touch capabilities onto Windows devices could position itself particularly well within the channel.
"When you look at the Android operating system, it was designed with touch in mind. All the touch-enabled apps translate onto the Windows platform [through BlueStacks]," Hedge told CRN. "If you look at the channel, I think this is the one place where this will immediately come to mind, for the offering of all-in-ones."
The alpha release of the BlueStacks App Player for Windows is already available, and is downloadable, free of charge.

Opera 12 Swaps Scrolls for Swipes With New ‘Opera Reader’

Alice in Wonderland gets the fancy paged-layout treatment in Opera 12
Opera software has released an experimental labs build of Opera 12 with support for what the company is calling Opera Reader.
Håkon Wium Lie, Opera Software’s CTO and creator of cascading stylesheets, previously proposed a new set of CSS tools that transform longer web pages into a more book-like experience, where the reader flips from page to page instead of scrolling down one long screen.
The new Opera Reader feature in Opera 12 is the first implementation of Lie’s proposed Generated Content for Paged Media standard. To try out the new Opera Reader and its book-like browsing experience, head on over to the Opera Labs site and download the latest build of Opera 12.
At its core, the Paged Media standard would offer web developers a way to paginate content — that is, take a single webpage and break it into multiple “pages,” with each page automatically fitted to the screen size of the device you’re using. For example, this article might be two “pages” when viewed on an iPad. However, because the pagination is done with CSS and the HTML remains as it is, there’s no added load time when you flip to the next page. So it’s not a tool that can easily be abused by publishers to mine extra pageviews. It adds all the good things about multi-page layouts and none of the bad.
If you’ve got Opera 12 installed, visit the new Opera Reader demo site where you can see some early experiments including the Alice in Wonderland demo shown above (note that the previous link only works in the latest build of Opera 12).
Keep in mind that this is an early version and so far the demos (and the browser support) are still very limited. Still, if you’d like to dive right in and learn how you can create book-like websites using the new Paged Media layout tools, check out the Opera Labs blog, which walks you through all the new CSS rules and how to use them.

Google Adsense Revenue sharing bookmarking websites

I joined hub pages just over three months ago now; when I joined I was wide eyed with excitement. The opportunity to share my knowledge with the world and and earn adsenserevenue for it just seemed too good to be true. As the days past I realized it wasn't as simple as that, people just don’t visit your articles withoutpromotion so I started researching promotion and I was introduced to theconcept of SEO (search engine optimization). With SEO came back linking andwith back linking came the concept of bookmarking websites of which I learnedthere were hundreds. So I decided to do some research on which bookmarkingsites to use. I then learned that some shared revenue with you whilst others didn't. I decided I should join the revenue sharers; my theory is if they arenot the biggest now they sure will be in the future!

7 Tips To Earn More With Adsense

Here is a compilationof some of the best adsense tips that will surely increase your adsenseearnings. I know a lot of people use adsense as their source of income so hereis the list the i made to help you earn more!

   1. Blend adsense with your content

Your adsense should not look like an adsbut should look like a content. So make the colors of your adsense and thebackground blend with your content. People today avoid ads as much as possibleso this is a very important thing to consider when deciding with the colors ofyour adsense.

If you want to make people click on youradsense then make them look like a part of your content.

Also, when choosing the color of youadsense title, i highly recommend blue (#0000FF). The explanation why blue isthe best is pretty simple, it is the most common color for links so people willright away know that it is a link. It is not important that your content titleand adsense title should have the same color because using blue for youradsense title works best.

   2. Make the url go away

It is against the rules of Google if youmake it invisible to the eyes of the people. One trick to do that is to changeit's color same with the content color of your ads so it will not look like aurl.

   3. Remove the borders

Blend the border color of your ads withyour background color so it will not be visible. It can help to blend your adswith your content because if you put borders in your ads, it will look morelike an ads and not a good idea.

   4. What type of ads to choose from adsense

There are a lot of ads to choose fromadsense but one of the most used is the 728 x 90 (leaderboard). This is best touse if you are just starting with adsense and best placed at the top of yourpage (usually under the header title).

You can also place it between your conentand it blends well with your content. Also, avoid placing ads in your footerbecause not a lot of readers would go that far.

If you don't have much space for ads, youcan also consider using the 468 x 60 (Banners) and 234 x 60 (Half-Banners). Youcan also place them at the top or in between you content just like theleaderboards. You can experiment by using different ads a week and use the onewith the best results.

I recommend not using the 468 x60(Banners) type of ads because it is one of the most commonly used one so if youuse it, people will know right away that it's an ads so they will AVOID it.Just like what i said, people avoid ads as much as possible so it's not a goodidea to use the 468 x 60 (Banners).

From my experience, the 336 x 280 (LargeRectangle) had the MOST CLICKS because it is the type of ads that blends bestwith the content.

If you want to place ads in yoursidebars, you can choose from 160 x 600 (Wide Skyscraper), 120 x 600(Skyscraper), and 120 x 240 (Vertical Banner). These are the best type of adsthat will fit in your sidebar.

   5. Don't put too much ads on your site

Avoid putting a lot of ads in your sitebecause if you do that, people will lose interest in visiting your site becausepeople want good content and not ads. So we can use the quality over quantitywhere we place only a few ads but has good placements.

   6. Ads placed above the fold

People spend a lot of time above the foldso this is the best place to put your ads. Above the fold is the first placewhere people can see without scrolling.

This is the perfect place for your ads.

   7. Choose text ads over image ads

In my opinion, people hate banners andwill avoid it as much as possible. Text ads are also easy to blend with yourcontent compared to image ads because you'll never know what kind if image willcome out. But, you can also consider image ads as your last resort.

ARM Says Cortex-A7 Processor's 'big.LITTLE' Technology Enables Increased Power Efficiency

ARM unveiled its Cortex-A7 MPCore processor on Thursday, which the U.K.-based chip-maker is claiming to be its most energy-efficient and high-performing ever, offering an extended battery life and possibly paving the way toward significantly cheaper high-end smartphones by 2013.
The new big.LITTLE technology employed by the processor allows a single device to leverage the performance of a Cortex-A15 and the energy-efficiency of a Cortex-A7 processor, which is five times as much as the Cortex-A8. ARM's big.LITTLE processing also enables an application to selectively assign each of these processors to different mobile tasks, based on performance demands. In other words, big.LITTLE technology delivers two processors in one.
Cortex-A7 advancements are expected to lead to price reductions on high-end smartphones within the next few years. According to ARM, the chip could ultimately deliver sub-$100 smartphones by 2013 that boast the same performance of phones selling for $500 today. The company has expressed a long-term goal of using the Cortex-A7 to supply "the developing world" with a mobile platform.
"As smartphones and tablets continue to evolve into users' primary compute device, consumers are demanding performance as well as the always on, always connected service they expect. The challenge for our industry and the ARM ecosystem is how to deliver on this," said Mike Inglis, executive vice president, Processor Division, ARM, in a statement. "The introduction of Cortex-A7 and big.LITTLE addresses this challenge and extends ARM’s technology leadership by setting a new standard for energy-efficient processors and redefining the traditional power and performance relationship."
ARM partners, including Samsung, LG, Texas Instruments, Red Bend and Sprint  are already on board to offer the Cortex-A7 processor within their smartphones.
"The advanced devices enabled by ARM's big.LITTLE processing will change how we live and work," said Yoram Salinger, CEO of Red Bend Software, in a statement. "Red Bend is uniquely positioned to leverage the virtualization extensions in ARM's processors and bring the most comprehensive Mobile Software Management solutions to device manufacturers and service providers, the automotive industry, enterprises and other markets. We are proud to be ARM's partner and work to improve the mobile user experience worldwide."
ARM could not confirm whether Apple (NSDQ:AAPL), which has a license to build chips using the ARM architecture and deploys them in its iOS devices such as the iPhone, has signed to use the Cortex-A7

Galaxy Nexus vs. iPhone 4S vs. Droid RAZR: Smartphone Battle Royale

Galaxy Nexus vs. iPhone 4S vs. Droid RAZR: Smartphone Battle Royale

Google’s Galaxy Nexus is the latest addition to this year’s hot smartphone line-up, alongside the iPhone 4S and the Droid RAZR. Unveiled last night, the Galaxy Nexus, manufactured by Samsung, embodies Google’s idea of the perfect smartphone, together with the brand-new Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich mobile OS.
But does the Galaxy Nexus stand a chance against Apple’s iPhone 4S, which is currently selling like hot cakes, or the skinny Droid RAZR, also unveiled this week?
The first thing you’ll notice on the Galaxy Nexus is the huge, curved 4.65-inch display, which is larger than the 4.3-inch one found on the Droid RAZR, and considerably bigger than the 3.5-inch display on the iPhone 4S. The Galaxy Nexus display doesn’t skimp on pixel density either; it has a 1280- by-720 pixel resolution, the highest in the comparison. The iPhone display however, still retains the highest pixel density at 330 ppi, a slight lead over the 316 ppi screen of the Galaxy Nexus.
The Galaxy Nexus is also very thin, but not thinner than the Droid RAZR (8.84 mm on the Nexus compared to 7.1 mm on the RAZR), which makes the iPhone 4S look a bit bulky at 9.3 mm. The Droid RAZR is also the lightest smartphone out of the bunch at 127 grams, while the iPhone 4S is the most compact given its smaller screen size.
Inside, the Galaxy Nexus, the Droid RAZR and the iPhone 4S run on the latest dual-core processors, namely 1.2GHz dual-core on the Android side, and 1GHz dual-core on the iPhone 4S. The Android phones also run on 1GB of RAM, while the iPhone 4S features half that amount. As for storage, all three phones come with 16GB of built-in memory, so you have plenty of space for your apps and media. The Galaxy Nexus and iPhone 4S come in 32GB flavors, too, or even up to 64GB at the high end for the 4S, which doesn’t have a MicroSD card slot for expandable storage. The Droid RAZR also comes with a 16GB MicroSD card included, so the total of bundled storage is bumped to 32GB.
In the multimedia department, you won’t run out of options with either of these phones. The Droid RAZR and the iPhone 4S have 8-megapixel cameras at the back that can record full HD 1080p video. The Galaxy Nexus can also record 1080p video, but, surprisingly, Samsung put only a 5-megapixel shooter on Google’s phone, which is less than what we have seen on other phones from the manufacturer, such as the Galaxy SII. All three phones also have video chat cameras on the front.
If you’re looking for extra tricks from your phone, the Galaxy Nexus might be what you’re looking for. Out of the three phones, the Nexus is the only device with Near Field Communication support, which allows you to make wireless payments (at a small, but growing list of retailers), as well as to beam contacts, websites, apps or maps to other NFC-enabled devices by just bringing the phones together and making them touch.

Review: uCoz Free Website Builder

Having your own personal website is a dream for most internet users nowadays. People have resorted to creating blogs hosted on a myriad of free services that will get the job most of the time. But if you really want to have full control on you site, you can either pay for your own hosting plan or setup your own server — which is intimidating to those who just wanted to post content easier but wants to have the freedom to do anything that are most of the time limited by the free plans. This is where the uCoz Free Website Builder comes in as they promise to provide a great website maker service for free. Sounds good? Read on more for the review of their builder and see if it’s a good alternative to the better known services.
Registration & Initial Configuration
Like with all other web services, you need to register and provide the necessary credentials. Once done, you’ll be presented with their “Webtop Desktop” that basically mimics your typical Windows desktop that has two icons as seen below:

As seen, this desktop only has two icons initially, the “Secure Login” and “My Websites”. In order to access your website control panel, you’ll be using this desktop to serve as login. And do take note that this login isn’t the same as your initial uCoz login (i.e. another password). This gives it another layer of security as you’ll be needing two login passwords in order to modify your site. For the desktop itself, the concept is good though it isn’t utilized that much. Opening the My Websites icon reveals all sites you’ve registered on uCoz and upon clicking it will open a new window, not on the uCoz desktop, but literally a new window or tab, and there you can access the control panel. If they had placed the control panel on a new window inside the Webtop Desktop, then it would have made the desktop itself serve more purpose. Other than that, you can create shortcuts that would allow you to either of the following:
Upon the first visit to your website control panel, you’ll be presented with the initial configuration that will let you set the website name, design and native languaege:
Speaking of designs, uCoz gives you around 250 designs to choose from depending on what you like your website to feel among others. Choosing a design is as simple as selecting a template from the list they’re giving:
Now this is the point where you determine what features your site will have. We have to give uCoz credit for giving users this much functionality, like forums, galleries, blogs, polls, and email forms among others.
Control Panel
Like with most control panels, you first have to get used to this one in order to get its full functionality, though for the most part, its intimidating for beginners. On the get go, we see the one limit that the free account has, disk space. As seen above, a free account only has 400 MB of space to work on. This may prove to be very little for some that wanted more multimedia content to be posted on their site. For expansion, you have the option of either paying for 1 month (yes, it is on a monthly basis) or for a multitude of months that will include discounts depending on the no. of months paid in advance. For example, you wanted to have 5GB worth of space for 1 month payment, uCoz will charge you $10 for 5GB extra space in 1 month.
Remember the modules shown earlier. uCoz gives you the option of adding and removing them in “real time”. So for example, you don’t want to have a forum anymore, you can simple set the module as inactive then activate it once you decided you want it again, it’s that easy.
If you want total, and we mean total, control over your CSS, then uCoz will greatly satisfy that demand. Users are given all the freedom in the world to edit, change or modify the CSS and even the HTML of a specific module. There’s one for pages, blog posts, galleries and basically any content that appears in the site, you can edit.
Creating Entries
Creating posts, among others, is also easy, uCoz gives you the option in editing them in the visual editor, the HTML editor and even the BB codes editor for those used to doing them in forums. Creating posts will also bring your screen to the page of the site itself where you’ll put the post. This will give you a better idea of how the post will look like with the other design elements of your site.
Once posted, each entry will be displayed in the site with the comments module below though there isn’t any means to share posts via the popular social networking sites.
Creating photo galleries on the other hand, while very useful is quite time-consuming. You have to upload photos one-by-one and you’ll be putting captions and descriptions in them the same way. If they only have the means of uploading images just like in Facebook, then things will be easier. Once uploaded, the gallery will appear like those seen in typical image hosting sites where each image will be in a sort of lightbox when displayed.
Final Thoughts
All in all, uCoz provides a very neat solution create a free website. They give you a wide, and we mean wide, range of customization features with its theme selection as well as HTML and CSS tweaking. It also allows you to choose a wide range of modules that can turn your site to a portal of services. The only limit we see for the free version of the service is the available space. At 400 MB, this is really small for today’s standards. Some may say that their monthly charges may be too high for just additional space when others can give more for a better cost.
